Damaged chlorine valves

Operating through the Royal Estates Seeb, the Sultanate of Oman hired IES to dispose of a large inventory of gas cylinders located at a facility near the Muscat airport in Oman.  The cylinders were in deteriorated condition many with inoperable valves.  In addition to the cylinder inventory IES was asked to recontainerize leaking cans of sulphuric acid.

Once in Oman IES worked quickly to coordinate a base of operation as well as identify local resources.  After establishing a base of operations IES personnel began the task of removing compressed gas cylinders from the storage yard in which they were located.  A breakdown of the inventory includes the following:

20 chlorine
2 acetylene

22 inerts
50 Freons
53 propane
6 large devalved cylinders

The chlorine cylinder valves were all in deteriorated condition and inoperable.  A low pressure tap and saddle was used to breach and remove chemical content from each cylinder.  Liquid chlorine and gas were directed to a liquid reactor containing a 35% sodium hydroxide/water mixture.  The acetylenes and inert cylinders were vented on site.  The empty cylinders were all staged for offsite disposal. 

IES was able to repackage both the propane and Freon on site and return to local business for use.
